This is me

This is me. At least, the me in my head. Right now I have short hair but I'm willing it to grow fast and return to me. Come on, baby...It's high time I had a blog of my own, isn't it? Yes. Now I can stop sharing my witticisms with Facebook and just dump them here. Cut out the middle man. No bureaucracy.

Why am I here? Well, this is a place for me to muse - about myself, about books, about life, and so on. I will probably talk about cancer a fair amount. But not excessively. I'll probably talk about "Friends" episodes at least as often.  So, get ready to be wowed by insight...or at least come away with a good book recommendation from time to time.

The Anxiety Olympics Arena Is Temporarily Closed for Cleaning

Last week was, well, hellish. I did my best to keep busy...we even had family pictures taken on Thursday morning: See? Tranquilizer darts DO work! And then came Thursday night and that meant I wasn't going to get much sleep. Not only because of the anxiety but because of the prednisone. See, way back a long time ago (um, last spring), the first time I had a high-contrast CT scan, I developed a mild rash a few days later. And so now all of my files have big ALLERGY ALERT stickers all over them, and any time I have to get a high-contrast scan, I have to take 10 tablets of steroids within the 24 before treatment and then, just for good measure, I chase that cocktail with a couple of Benadryl an hour before the scan. It's super fun. I'm jittery as hell and then suddenly sleepy (if they give me the injectable Benadryl, then I'm REALLY the life of the party). Goodbye, Happy Hour...Hello, Healthy Liver (Cancer Post)

I'm getting my groove back. I can feel it. I stay awake all day (well, most days). I've been organizing up a storm. I'm enjoying cooking and baking again. The hideous acne/rash I had as a result of one of my chemo drugs is almost gone - I've actually left the house without cover-up on and not scared people. Yay for summer! Yay for recovery! Let's drink to that! June 2013, at the mountain house. God, I miss my hair. But wait. I don't have the energy I want. And I get terrible edema if I have drinks. One or two glasses of wine seems to be okay, sorta. But if I decide to have a vodka and soda, or if I have, over the course of an evening, more than two drinks, then I wake up the next morning having gained - and this is not a lie - at least 4-6 pounds. It's water weight. So then I start taking my edema drugs, which make me pee every 45 minutes all day long, for about three days. 2018 July 17: Crying in the MRI and My Friend Jen

Honestly, I've been trying to write a post for what feels like forever about my friend Jen, who died of complications from metastatic colorectal cancer on 2 July. But every time I start, I can't seem to get it all together, so that one is going to have to wait a while, I guess. My grief and survivor guilt and sadness and anger and passion and hate for a disease I know so intimately - it all needs to percolate a little. But I'm not worried. Jen wouldn't have minded waiting to hear all of what I need to say.* As a matter of fact, I was thinking of her - and of this blog post - last night, while I was inside the MRI machine.
